Taming Sound through Acoustics

Taming Sound through Acoustics

When it comes to making recordings it is true that a variety of factors become important in terms of making a clean reproduction. The most obvious of these is background noise that gets captured and spoils the experience for the final listener. But one often overlooked factor is that of sound acoustics which can also have a negative impact.

Perhaps you’re planning on creating a home studio and you managed to get an entire empty room free for the studio. But during recordings find that the sound becomes distorted. This is actually common place in rooms without furniture. Perhaps you went to an auditorium or theatre and found that the sound was muffled or echo laden making it hard to discern. These discrepancies are caused by sound acoustics.

What exactly is sound acoustics? Essentially when any sound is generated the environment in which it is generated will have an effect on the final sound. When a sound enters a new environment one of three things can happen which are absorption, reflection or transmission.

Absorption would downplay certain frequencies or generally muffle the entire soundscape while transmission is the passage of sound through the environment. In a perfect environment there would be 100% transmission which never happens in reality. Reflection causes the sound to bounce off the environment leading to echoes that reduces the clarity of sound.

What exactly is an echo? An echo is reflection of a sound that is heard late enough for it to be heard as a distinct sound of its own. The greater the effect the harder it is to hear the original sound which is why generally efforts are made to minimize this phenomenon.

So what can be done to minimize the effect of reflection? Any sound technician will know that the materials of the environment will greatly affect the acoustic properties of the final sound. Certain materials will reflect less. For example titled environments reflect heavily while carpeted environments will absorb sound too much creating a muffled final sound.

When creating an environment great attention is given to the materials that are used to create it. The use of special materials such as sound absorption panels can reduce the reflective properties of the environment creating a better soundscape. These panels reduce the effect of reflection making the final sound clear and intelligible. For certain situations the sound absorption properties of the material can be tailored to absorb on certain frequencies that may be present in the environment.
